During a meeting with the Fargo Public Schools Superintendent and his Cabinet I was asked to share information with parents and other advocacy organizations. Any family without internet access should contact the Principal at their child’s school and tell them you do not have internet access. Superintendent Gandhi said the District will make sure families get internet access. The same applies to devices students need to access education. If you do not get a favorable response from the Principal then you should contact the Superintendent’s office. I suggest you document your communications so you can share that with the Superintendent’s office. Please let P&A and other advocacy groups know the outcomes of requests so we can all be aware of the successes as well as any ongoing unmet needs. If you need assistance or have questions after you contact the Principal and Superintendent’s office please contact P&A or other advocacy groups you are working with. Parents, please complete this survey by clicking on the link. It is confidential and does not ask for any personal identifying information. You may receive this link from multiple sources but only submit one survey per family. You are welcome to share this survey with other parents or disability organizations. Please copy and paste this email if you do share the link. This survey will be a live link until midnight of Monday 4/21/2020. The purpose of this survey is to ensure that all children with disabilities are receiving equal access to education through their long-distance learning plans that should have been developed in compliance with the IEP or 504 Plan. At the end of the survey is a “Comment” area and we hope you will make comments about how things are working for you and your child. Thank you for participating in this survey.

Physical distancing does not have to mean social isolation. Prioritize social connection through safe modalities (social media, facetime, zoom, teams, skype, WhatsAp, and others), step outside or go for a walk, watch a movie or engage in a hobby with someone else remotely, and reach out for support when needed by dialing 1-800-273-8255(TALK) or dial 2-1-1 for local resources. You can also text HOME to 741741. Both resources are quickly ansered, but you will receive an automated greeting while you get connected.
Loss of job, sense of purpose, belonging or role can increase distress. Generosity and service to others is protective against suicide. If someone is in crisis, this might not be the strategy for them. However, for people who are needing a way to give back and to increase their sense of accomplishment, there are ways to get involved. Many people are making lunches for food-insecure residents, writing letters to isolated elders and people they know might be struggling, sewing masks and more. Find groups on social media and on line.
Face to face therapy and other coping skills might not be available to many North Dakotans. They also may have stock piled lethal means like over-the-counter medications and firearms. This can increase the risk of harm to self or others. Increase coping skills by visiting https://mhanational.org/covid19 and lock all firearms and medications such that youth and loved ones that are struggling emotionally do not have unsupervised access.
